The History Of The Oneida Church Of God

God called a man to lead a small band of Christians to Oneida, Kentucky, and dare to start a church where others had failed. A man that had just enough knowledge of God to be obedient, and not enough experience to fully understand the responsibility he was about to face. This man was Joey Burns.

Joey and his wife, Vicki, became born again Christians in 1979. "This is when we first became acquainted with the Church of God organization and began attending the Burning
Springs Church of God.

We grew in the Lord under the leadership and direction of Rev. E. C. Campbell and his wife, Ruby, for the next nine years. During this time, God was preparing myself and my family to do a work for Him. Many spiritual battles were fought and won, and many lessons were learned in preparation for this calling. When God was ready to open the doors, we were ready to go. We knew the time was right because God had prepared our hearts. Seventeen people left the Burning Springs Church and set out on a mission for the Lord in Oneida. We had no church building, no furniture, and no money ... but God had a plan."

The Oneida Church of God was organized on August 7, 1988, with 27 members. It began in a 3-bedroom log cabin in the heart of Oneida. We had a building, but no pews. We found an old church building with pews on Teges Creek just setting empty. Off we went to check out those pews, because we knew ... God had a plan. Needless to say, we got all the pews we needed. Next, we needed a piano. God provided that, too. We turned the dining room into a stage; the living room into the auditorium, and the three bedrooms into Sunday School rooms. Soon we had outgrown the log cabin...but God had a plan.

Quite conveniently, there was a vacant store-front building right around the corner from the little log cabin.  Soon after outgrowing the
cabin, we moved into that old vacant store-front building for approximately 2 to 3 months.  We stayed there long enough to organize the
church.  It wasn't too soon either, because the rats were almost out-numbering the members!  They came to church, too!

Squire Davidson and his wife, Julie, had pastored a little Holiness church in Oneida for years. Brother Davidson was getting older and needed help preaching, and we needed more room. We traded even ... God had a plan. Brother Squire turned his church over to us and he and Julie became members of the Oneida Church of God. We stayed at that little church until 1991, when God provided us with a newly constructed church building.

The congregation continued to grow in the new building so much that we had to build onto the
church twice.  Still continuing to grow, we purchased all of the available property surrounding the
church to accommodate parking, yet we found ourselves still needing more space to accommodate
the people that God had added to the church...God had a plan.

During 2003, God planted a seed in our hearts to find a different location for the church.  This was a big decision for us, since we knew God had planted us in Oneida.  In recent months, the school board had closed a local elementary school due to the low number of children in attendance.  It was just a few miles back up the road leading into Oneida.  Now, wouldn't it just like God  to drop little "inspirational hints" into our hearts every time we drove by that school!  You see, we passed right by it going to and coming from the church in Oneida every service.

During this time, there were three different Church of God ministers whom we'd confided in about our "dilemma" at various times and
occasions.  They were G.J. Chandler, National Evangelist of the Church of God, J. David Stevens, Kentucky State Overseer, and Wayne
Robertson, Evangelist.  All three men, on separate occasions, made a God-inspired comment that was confirmation to us.  All three had
stated to us, "There's a building.  Why not buy that!" (concerning the closed elementary school)...God had a plan.

During the following year, there was much prayer and fasting, needless to say.  Every obstacle we faced (and there were many!) was over-
came and won by a miraculous move of God.  We surely did not have the sufficient funds to buy such a massive building (26,500 square
feet, plus 8 acres of land), but we knew if it was God's will for us to move, then God would provide what we needed...and He did.

In October 2004, there was a public auction held on the grounds of the closed elementary school, to be sold to the highest bidder.  Every
person there had a different purpose for purchasing the building.  Approximately 60 of the church members showed up for the auction.  As
the bidding began, one after the other started placing bids...except for Pastor Burns.  He just stood there.  Everyone was so tense, we
could hardly breathe.  Finally, Pastor Burns spoke up and said, "$275,000."  It was as if a water faucet had been turned off.  No one else
placed another bid.  It was like an angel had come down and shut their mouths, like the story of Daniel in the lions' den in the Bible.  The
auctioneer asked for further bids, but no one said anything.  The bidding was closed.  The small group of believers had Holy Ghost chills
run up and down our spines.  We absolutely knew then...God had a plan.

Needless to say, thereafter we purchased the building for an agreed upon amount of $400,000.  It's been almost 12 years now since we
moved into the elementary school building, which seats approximately 500-550 comfortably.  As of today, we have 501 members and still
growing.

Our church growth is attributed to our strong beliefs. We believe in the whole Bible rightly divided, salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues, divine healing for those in the atonement, and the second coming of Jesus- - (also known as the rapture of the church). This is only a small portion of our beliefs. Our strong commitment to God and His Word is the basis for our personal convictions and source of our strength to reach out to others.

We have spiritual Sunday School teachers and strong youth leaders for Children's Church. We have great evangelistic worship services with an outpouring of God's Spirit in every service. We have a great outreach through our men's and women's fellowship meetings. We currently have approximately 50 outreach ministries, including a food pantry.  Our church is always willing to extend a helping hand.

God built the church at Oneida, and we feel blessed to be a part of His perfect plan. God not only "had" a plan, but still "has" a plan, because HE is the One who built the church. Matt 16:18, Jesus said, "And also I say unto thee ... upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
